Journalism and Mass Media Department: D.S.B. Campus, Nainital

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication was established in Kumaun University in 2006 as a pioneer institute of mass media in Kumaun belt of Uttarakhand. The department aims to nurture a distinct breed of journalists who are committed to their profession and set high standards in serving their country, culture and society. Combining youth, experience and expertise, our faculty members help students in choosing their field of interest and specialization, and help them discover their innate potential. We also harness huge human resources of Uttarakhand, well known for its illustrious line of journalists - past and present. During the course, the department provides opportunities to students to interact with prominent personalities from different walks of life including noted academicians, media professionals, artistes, administrators and statesmen.

As a noted journalist and academician, Prof. Girish Ranjan Tiwari has seen the best of both worlds. Leaving behind a secure banking job as a probationary officer in 1986, Dr. Tiwari decided to pursue his interest in journalism full time and joined Amar Ujala, Nainital as a reporter. Carving a niche for himself through his insightful news coverage, Dr. Tiwari rose to the position of Bureau Chief, Amar Ujala, Nainital. During his illustrious career in journalism, Dr. Tiwari has written more than 600 news articles, features and opinion pieces for noted national dailies. As an academician, Dr. Tiwari has been teaching in Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Kumaun University, Nainital, for more than a decade. He has penned three books titled “Constitution of India and Press Laws”, “ABCD of Media” and “Electronic Media: Vividh Aayam”. He has received several awards and recognition at national and international level for his remarkable contribution to the field of Hindi journalism, promotion of Hindi language and spreading awareness about Right to Information (RTI). He is the recipient of the highest state honour of Uttarakhand (Uttarakhand Ratn) for his remarkable work in media and education. Dr. Tiwari has also received several awards and recognition for his contribution to social service. He has organized various programmes to promote social and environmental causes including blood donation camps, tree plantation, awarding meritorious students from poor economic background, cleanliness initiatives in Nainital etc. Dr. Tiwari has visited Hungary, Mauritius, Holland, U.K., U.S., Thailand and presented papers at various international seminars and conferences. He has participated in dozens of talk shows and other programmes relayed from All India Radio, Lucknow and Almora. He is frequently invited as a resource person by Uttarakhand Open University, Centre for Good Governance, ATI, Nainital and UGC-HRDC, Kumaun University, Nainital. Presently, Prof. Tiwari is working as the head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, D.S.B. Campus, Kumaun University, Nainital.
