The Department came into existence at graduate level in 1951 and was upgraded to the post-graduation in 1966. Young and dynamic faculty members of the department are actively engaged in teaching and research. The department has well-established laboratories for Fish biology, Entomology, Microbiology, Cell and Molecular biology. Faculty members of the department have broad area of specialization viz, fisheries, entomology, neuroscience, microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology and published more than 150 papers in high impact factor reputed international journals. Department has its own computer lab with Wi-Fi facility, Seminar room, departmental library, play ground, spacious lawn etc. The Museum of the department is unique in the kumaun region. Due to continuous efforts of the faculty members, in 2019 department received DST FIST grant for the establishment of advanced research facilities. Now department has central lab facility well equipped with Fluorescent microscope, -80 deep freezer, CO2 incubator for culture of animal cell lines, PCR machine, electrophoretic units (for SDS PAGE and Agarose gels), Refrigerated centrifuge, micro-centrifuge, Gel documentation system, Research microscope with photo-compatibility, Incubator shakers, Laminar airflow hood, autoclave, digital weighing machine, digital microtomes with disposable blades, MiliQ water assembly and many other instruments for advanced molecular biology research. The faculty members of the department have been actively engaged in research and have received research grants from various funding agencies such as UGC, DST and SERB. The alumni of the department have been assuming important position within the country (such as Member of Lok Sewa Ayog, University heads; Assistant director in technical Education, fisheries experts; Scientists etc.) and abroad (Head of Cardiology in USA). Yearly, approximately 500 students are enrolled in various classes run by the Department. At present, the department offers specialization in three branches, i.e. Entomology, Fish & Fisheries and Animal Biotechnology.

To develop and become a full-fledged teaching and research center, cater the needs and challenges of the region in Zoological Sciences by cutting edge teaching and research.
